Essay Topics in Literary Studies
Essay Topics in Literary StudiesBecause of the study in recent years of literature, history and social studies, the next step for students interested in writing an essay is to take the initiative to learn the techniques of essay topics. History of literature and college level education includes a very wide variety of essays to be written on topics that cover issues from the latest novels to current affairs, and many other types of historical or literary analysis.Teachers must give some thought to the theme of their course before selecting a topic to discuss in the course, but it is often easier to make a choice if the teacher begins with a broad historical interpretation. A good starting point would be the important events in the topic area, as well as any political or social developments that were significant at the time. For students that want to be more involved in the historical research, the next step is to search for general essays that have been written on the topic in the form in which the teacher wishes the student to use. These topics may include an article, an essay, a short story or a novel. It is also possible to write a monograph, using the techniques that have been taught to writers in the historical writing class.Students will find that many of the documents and essays that they find can be used to demonstrate a broad and traditional type of historical analysis. Topics may include the evolution of Europe and the world in the 18th century and early twentieth century, or the development of the modern style of writing.A student looking for a more modern and contemporary type of analysis can look for historical writings from the popular era in which the writer is interested. Sometimes the focus of such writings will be the importance of technology in the lives of individuals in a particular culture.Other times the student may want to look at a true period in the development of Western literature. This type of essay is called a literary study, because the author will spend time trying to understand the significance of the various genres of writing that were produced. In this type of essay the writer will spend time studying literature by a particular artist or group of artists and paying special attention to the different styles and genres that these artists produced. Themes are very similar to those in the preceding categories, but again the author spends a lot of time looking at specific works by different artists. All of the topics that are studied in a course in literature, history and cultural studies are great teaching tools. Students who want to be better writers should consider a broader range of themes for essays, as well as seeking out essays on these topics that can be used in their writing projects.
